metal 02 | metal sculpture

[Fall 2020] with guidance from Lewis Snyder

Much like the Metal 01 sculpture, I also drew inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition paintings for this Metal 02 piece. I wanted to create vertical stacking that would lead the eye from the base up to the circular top piece (a heating coil). The open, rectangular, tunnel-like moment seen in the base is repeated up the composition at several points as well. A stick welder was used to spot-weld each piece together. It was challenging to assemble Metal 02, because I had several thin metal pieces in this composition, unlike in Metal 01, and it took a lot more focus and precision for me to not burn holes through these when trying to adhere them.
