metal 03 | metal sculpture
[Fall 2020] with guidance from Lewis Snyder
Metal 03 actually consists of just two found pieces- a heating element and a metal channel. I opted to use the metal channel as the base of the piece, and measured out the points that I wanted to attach the heating element to. I used a drill-bit to drill holes through those points. I wanted the heating element to be squeezed slightly in tension, but not condensed enough that any of the coils would be touching each other. I placed each end-point of the heating element in place on the base, and screwed it in from the underneath. I brushed muriatic acid onto the base channel and left it for several hours to rust. I was hoping that the base would keep the yellow-green hue shown in the process photos, but it has darkened over time.
