metal 01 | metal sculpture
[Fall 2020] with guidance from Lewis Snyder
For the series of three metal sculptures that I worked on in Fall 2020, I drew inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition paintings. I went to my local salvage yard in search of metal pieces (mainly steel and aluminum) that were not representational, but could just serve as compositional elements. Linear and angular pieces, interesting textures and colors, various weights and thicknesses, simple shapes. It took a lot of playing, editing, and several iterations to create a composition that was engaging from all angles.
I used a stick welder to spot-weld each piece together. It was a tedious process to assemble Metal 01, but I really enjoyed exploring spatial design in a way that was new to me.
